Also called the spiny anteater, is only one of the two egg-laying mammals in the world. It is covered with coarse hair and spines. It has very short but strong limbs and is an ef? cient digger. It has a long and slender snout and a long, sticky tongue, with which it catches ants and termites. The echidna does not have teeth so it ‘chews’ its food by crushing it between its tongue and mouth cavity. It is found in Australia and New Guinea.
