Dr. Kurien was born on the 26th of November 1921 in Kerala. He studied Physics and later went to the United States for higher education. In 1949, Kurien was sent by the Government of India to run the experimental creamery in Gujarat. There, he set up the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union in 1950. It later became Amul.
