Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on 26th July to commemorate the brave soldiers of the Indian Army who fought in the Kargil War of 1999. This significant day marks India's victory over Pakistan in the high-altitude battles fought in the Kargil region of Ladakh (then part of Jammu and Kashmir).
The war began in May 1999 when Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated Indian territory, occupying key positions along the Line of Control (LoC). These intrusions were detected by Indian forces, and a counter-operation named Operation Vijay was launched. The Indian Army fought with great courage and determination to reclaim the occupied peaks. Despite the tough mountainous terrain and harsh weather conditions, the Indian soldiers displayed unmatched valor.
After nearly two months of intense combat, the Indian forces successfully pushed back the infiltrators and reclaimed the posts. The war officially ended on 26th July 1999, which has since been celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas. The nation pays tribute to the martyrs and war heroes on this day. Ceremonies and parades are held at war memorials, especially at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh.
This day serves as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of our armed forces. It also instills a sense of patriotism and unity among the citizens. Schools, colleges, and public institutions organize various programs like essay competitions, patriotic songs, and speeches to educate the youth about the importance of national defense.
