The National Maritime Day is celebrated on 5th April every year. The day marks the first voyage of India’s first merchant vessel, SS Loyalty, in 1919. The SS Loyalty, owned by the Scindia Steam Navigation Company, journeyed from Mumbai (then known as ‘Bombay’) to London.
In those days, the British dominated the global maritime and British companies dominated the shipping industry. But, an intelligent Gujarati industrialist, Mr Walchand Hirachand, envisioned a strong Indian, domestic, shipping industry for India and created a strong domestic shipping company, the Scindia Steam Navigation Company.
While the World Maritime Day is celebrated in late September, India’s National Maritime Day is observed in April as the culmination of Merchant Navy Week. The celebration has been observed since 1964 to commemorate India’s entry into the international mercantile shipping community in 1919.
