Short Essay on Raja Ram Mohan Roy
Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a great social reformer, thinker and one of the makers of modern India. He founded the Brahmo Samaj. Roy believed in scientific temperament and broad outlook. He advocated for freedom, social reforms and equality. He thought ahead of his time. His ideas, ideals, and practices greatly contributed to the reawakening and renaissance of the country. He was born on 22nd May, 1772 in Radhanagar, a village in West Bengal.
Ram Mohan Roy’s father, Rama Kant Roy, was a wealthy landlord. He sent Ram Mohan to a village school for his elementary education, where the young boy learned Arabic and Persian in addition to his native Bengali. He had a keen interest in learning and was later sent to Patna, a major centre of education at the time. There, he studied the Koran and Sufi saints, and was greatly impressed by the Islamic philosophy of equality and monotheism. These studies broadened his mental horizon, allowing him to respect and revere different religions.
He was also strongly opposed to other social evils such as the sati system, child marriage, casteism, polygamy, and the exploitation of women. It was because of his relentless efforts and crusade against the system of sati that it was finally banned by the government in December, 1828. A law was passed making the practice of sati illegal and punishable as a criminal offence.
He also advocated for widow remarriage and the abolition of child marriages. He was particularly distressed by the plight of Hindu widows, many of whom were young women. He wrote articles and pamphlets in both Bengali and English against cruel social practices and faced the anger and backlash of orthodox Hindus. However, he never lost heart or abandoned his cause. He founded the Brahmo Sabha on August 20, 1828 which later came to be known as Brahmo Samaj.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy knew well that Indian society in general and the Hindu society in particular suffered from many social and religious evils and superstitions mainly due to lack of education and rational thinking. Therefore, he propagated the study of science and underlined the importance of opening schools like the Anglo-Hindu School and the Vedanta College. He wrote frequently on many scientific subjects of immediate social importance and also translated ancient Hindu religious texts into Bengali, Hindi and English.
